Accelerated Innovation starts by asking the right questions

Let's face it, if innovation & scale had a nemesis it would have to be, complexity. After all how can you have NPI, if your processes and systems:

a) Don't talk to each other

b) Are too complex to use

c) and if they do, it takes twice if not 3 times as long to commercialize.

Perhaps brands are not asking the right questions or rather brands need to be talking to new advisors.

I've heard great things from companies like thoughtworks, who come into a company or industry challenged with a problem, and with a fresh set of eyes, within weeks or months, have a working solution.

Every company I visit, I ask a question to the product creation teams:

"please raise your hand if you are delighted with the process and tools you are using to create product"

The response is not surprising. So far, no one has raised their hand. The reason: COMPLEXITY.

Brands for years have relied on strategic consultants who are incentivized by billable hours and lengthy process analysis, assessment, RFI, RFP, demo scripts, system selection and implementation which in total, could easily reach $100K to well over 10's of millions of dollars and take as long as 2 to 5 years to fully implement.

Enter stycheco, with a more nimble and high value approach to addressing the complexity around NPD (New Product Development) and NPI (New Product Introduction) for the retail, apparel and fast moving consumer goods category.

stycheco is like no other advisory firm in the fashion and fast moving consumer goods industry. We are the only advisory firm that has earned the trust of retailers, brands, technology providers and industry experts by having co-founded and globally implemented an award winning PLM application, YuniquePLM from 2002 to 2009. Moreover, we are the only firm who incorporates a uniquely deep technological and process expertise, in the fast moving, apparel product design to commercialization arena. The combined knowledge streams of technology and process experience, offer brands a unique ability to align, educate and execute both 2D to 3D on-boarding in weeks rather than years.

Stycheco also mitigates a brands, risk and exposure to years of time, trying to implement something that will most likely be obsolete by the time they have fully implemented.

Just as there is a push in retail and fashion to be fast, nimble and cost effective, we want brands to be sure they are fast, nimble and prepared for a sustainable PLM & 3D journey.

Customer Experience

When you put the guest, client and or customer experience at the center of your value proposition - a powerful transformation begins.

In retail and lifestyle brands, many organizations are looking to maximize the customer experience through highly innovative sustainable products and messaging. When you REALLY put the customer experience as the driving factor, everything becomes easier to focus on.

Getting in-bound and outbound teams to understand your product message is more vital today than before. Product experience, value (Benefit / Price) and quality are still leading attributes of buyers along with sustainability. Socializing a product range early and accurately is still a challenge based on the limitations of our current model of flat sketches and physical limitation such as availability of raw materials, supply-chain and logistics and physical sample costs.

Would you rather do go down a path which will bring marginal improvement or one that will give you EXPONENTIAL improvement.

Questions to ask are:

1. What is your adoption ratio from design to development?

2. How long is commercialization process from concept/planning to in-store.

3. How many samples do you average per development style?

4. How many design and development samples do you request per season?

5. What is your Why ?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can quickly begin down an amazing path from your "as-is" state to your "to-be". StycheCo can show you measurable improvements in accuracy, collaboration, speed to market and supply-chain visibility and agility. We are not consultants but enthusiasts who have a track record of award winning customer satisfaction and long-term vision.

Fashion Connected: Meetup Lunch and Learn, Social Product Development pt. 1

A week ago today, was the inaugural lunch and learn MeetUp, hosted by Fashion Connected, for a brand new initiative called, Social Product Development. Although it was just an hour and a half, we had industry leaders in top international and national retailers, design, color and trend executives, vertical lifestyle and active wear brand, ecom companies and freelance designers.

The focus of the event was to have lunch and learn, but also to also socialize. The discussion of the day was to expound on social product development as a 3 part series, of which this was the first part.

One of the best moments for me during the event, happened very early during introductions. As we were going around the room getting to know who our neighbors are, it was soon time for a young man to take his turn. He politely said, " Hi, I'm Noah, I'm 14 and I'm here to learn more about the fashion industry". Everyone smiled and warmly welcomed Noah.  Next to Noah was an executive and leader in the industry who quipped "Hi I'm not 14" and the entire room broke into laughter.

The retail, apparel, footwear and accessories industry are facing pretty big challenges today in how they commercialize their brand and products. The main topic in this section, was to begin to identify what those are and begin to learn how social product development can be a clever platform to bringing tools together in solving them.

Another highlight was when we discussed mobile integration for inspiration in textile surface design creation- a concept we like to call "design in motion". The goal here was to demonstrate the ability to be fast, accurate and collaborative with Pointcarre and BeProduct together. In an earlier discussion, this topic was referred to as "transformational". The ability to see a creative thought all the way through its completion virtually without interference or obstacles. Showing that collaborative tools and people can cheerfully visualize a shirt in multiple fabrics and prints in minutes via virtual prototyping through to ecom.

The meeting went very well and we will be posting some of the highlights on both the StycheCo, Pointcarre and BeProduct websites and YouTube.

Personally I tried to ask everyone after the event if they felt they in fact learned something from this event and most did.

I wanted to personally thank everyone from Fashion Connected meetup who joined and a special thanks to BeProduct and Pointcarre who did a great job and who also be at the 2nd installment of social product development.

Finally I wanted to thank Noah, who I had the fortune of bringing to this meetup. Not only did he actively participate but in fact, I learned much from him. Although he likes some designers that personally I did not know, we both have our top designer choice as Alexander McQueen … Ironic is it not … That this young man who joined our meetup, actually knew the motto for fashion connected and stycheco inc., which is inspired from McQueen - "respect the tradition but break the rules"

Hope to see you at the next event September 9th at 12:30pm. See the link provided on the RSVP .

Design First, Design Fast

Inspired by the Olympic efforts of all the athletes, the planning and execution of the Rio Olympics, I wanted to share a few thoughts and ask the question. Why is speed so important to us? Why are we attracted to it? and how important is speed when it comes to design? Design is a practice that statrs and enables product creation - and we covet the ability to do what we do quickly and with authenticity and accuracy. However, when we look at the importance of  speed to market, product creation and major initiatives such as PLM (product life-cycle management), there are conditions that have slowed down that process.

There is a perception that design departments and creatives are resistant to technology specifically PLM. However it should be emphasized, that design is pro technology. Design has embraced technology that makes them faster, allows them to accomplish more in less time, seamlessly integrates with other technology tools, and is super easy to use.  It is not just the design group, but rather any group or department, will opposes technology that; slows them down, adds more work to their already challenging day, doesn't intelligently work with their preferred software tools and has a poor user experience. The consequences of that adds costs, risk and complexity which reduces your speed.

Design teams are highly tech savvy and undisputed curators of aesthetic, style, color, graphics, fabrication, fit and aspiring to be more sustainable. However,  corporate intra-departmental culture and structure doesn't make it easy nor transparent, to share facts and answers to important questions related to product creation experience.

This "voice of the product creator" anonymous survey, is a peer to peer platform to answer and share facts in-order to improve the product creation experience for everyone especially design. The goal is to build bridges not walls.

2016 PLM & Digital Product Creation Survey for Retail, Apparel, Accessory & Footwear (RAAF).

StycheCo is continuing its open and transparent peer to peer approach to thought leadership and engagement for digital product creation in the retail, apparel, accessory and footwear (RAAF) market.

The 2016 RAAF digital product creation survey is not like any another. Industry leaders and top executives at retail and lifestyle brands want to know and hear from those who drive product creation. The traditional corporate structure doesn't make it easy nor transparent, to share facts and answers to important questions related to product creation via PLM systems.   This open survey is intended for those who are the direct users of PLM - merchandisers, designers, fabric and trim specialists, graphics and textile, product development, technical designers and overseas merchandisers.

Although this is an open and anonymous survey, please encourage your product creation teams to participate in this user experience focused survey.

We have heard about the challenges and opportunities of PLM, now it's time for your voice to be heard.

Designers, Product Development specialists, Graphic Designers, Technical Designer, Sourcing and Overseas buying offices can all participate so we can all share and learn from the results.
